At the beginning of the year, I said out loud, “I’m going to listen to more music this year.” No one else was in the room, so no one but myself keeps me accountable to this quiet January promise. I made it because since moving to a smaller city where commuting isn’t a part of my routine, I’ve missed my daily 2 hours of listening to new music.
Listening to music, particularly songwriting, is one of my favorite sources of inspiration.
Like, when I listen to Morgan Wallen’s “Just In Case,” I start mapping out a second chance contemporary romance where it’s the male main character who is pining and putting his life on hold for the girl next door who years ago decided she needed to go see the world first. Nic D’s “i’ll set the table” made me finally *see* the vision for the moment I walk down the aisle to say, “I do.”
There’s something about music that opens the door to my mind, heart, wants, and needs. Others say inspiration is often the result of unintentional a-ha moments. You’re magically sitting in a room when suddenly, an idea sprouts without warning. I believe you find inspiration by looking for it.
I know music unlocks that door for me, but so does baking, walking without headphones on, sitting at dinner alone, and listening to the conversations around me. I like paying attention to the world around me because it clues me into the world inside me.
With what’s left of this work week, find a few minutes to sit in your own company with a habit you love or miss; who knows if it holds the key to a door you’ve been trying to strong-arm this whole time?
