Yesterday, I sat down to write, and nothing came out. On days like that, I’m reminded of one of my favorite lines from The Artist’s Way — "Great Creator, I will take care of the quantity. You take care of the quality.”
Most days, I think of quantity as a word count in the green. But, since yesterday my word count was nonexistent, I had time to think about how this line is one that I apply to almost all areas of my life.
I can count my close friendships on one, maybe two hands. In my twenties, I went on many first and second dates but not many third ones until I found the man who is now my soon-to-be husband. From work to life, I see how much I have always had a quality-over-quantity mindset, but it wasn’t until I read The Artist’s Way that I realized that the only way to quality is through quantity.
You figure out who you are every day that you show up and ask questions, put down words, meet new people, or pick up a new book. You may not finish those reads or keep those people forever, but they help build your definition of ‘quality.’ Which I guess to me is also synonymous with ‘wanted,’ ‘significant,’ ‘great,’ and ‘unmatched.’
It’s freeing when you realize your path to the ‘quality, quality, quality’ sometimes needs to include empty space or not-right-for-you iterations. It takes the pressure off of needing to get it all right the first time because you’re guaranteed a next time.
LOVE this. Totally resonates :)
